Rose St. Market

This was my stall at the Rose St. Market on Sunday. It was very cold and VERY QUIET. Even Brunswick St was quiet. But that gave me a chance to catch up with my friend Mel, who I shared the stall with.

Mel's resin belts with mobile phone parts were very popular with guys and her bracelets were popular with the girls. I hope she does another stall at the Rose St. Market or a similar place as I think her work is of a high quality and she knows good design.

So it's back to the Camberwell market for me. I'll be there next Sunday selling my cards, kokeshi dolls and other Japanese antiques. Oh, and btw, I'll be getting another shipment of goodies from Japan soon. So be sure to come down to the Camberwell market and check my stall out.

Cards for the Rose St Market

I was up late last night printing cards using my gocco.

The kokeshi and daruma have been drawn from kokeshi that my mother owns.
The reason why I drew kokeshi from my mother's collection was because at the time, my shipment of household goods which contained my own collection of kokeshi had not yet arrived.

I wanted a wood block print effect for these cards, so I used a pencil to fill the pictures. They were then reduced and photocopied for the purpose of making a print from the gocco.

These cards will be on sale tomorrow at the Rose St. Market.

Collage Pouches

I have spent all week...well, to be honest weeks completing these collage pouches.

They take a long time to make. And because I work full time at the moment, they take even longer.

It is for love, not for profit that I make these. I like to call it art.

You'll find these little pouches at the Rose St. Market this Sunday along with a few other things.

New Toy

My new toy arrived in the mail this morning as I was sewing my pouches in preparation for the Rose St. Market this Sunday. Can you guess what it is...? Why it's a tracing light box! I'll be using it for making cards and hopefully for stencils too! If you're looking for a light box yourself then I suggest ebay. Art shops sell them, but the prices are to high to pay for a box with a light in it.

Rose St. Market

This Sunday (May 30, 2010) I will have a stall at the Rose St. Market with my friend Melissa. I will be selling my pouches, cards and artwork, while Melissa will be selling resin jewellery. What makes Melissa's jewellery so special is that she uses mobile phone parts in her work. So if you are free this Sunday, please pop down to say hello.

Textile printing - week two - the final day

Yesterday was day two and the final day of my textile printing course.

The first few hours of the class was spend playing around with stencils we had made during the week.

There was also room to experiment with layering.

Finally, we did a repeat pattern using our own fabric. I had some navy fabric that I thought would look nice with white ink. I think it looks a little Japanese don't you think?

Now, my question is...which one do you like? Which one should I get printed as a textile print to try and sell?

Textile Printing

As you have guessed, today I began the first of two lessons in textile screen printing.

I did the course to compliment my pattern making and garment construction studies.

I have played around with textile printing in the past, but only with my gocco stamp.

I learned a lot about textile printing and got a few business contacts for future projects thanks to Lara from Harvest and Tegan from Ink & Spindle.

One of the best things I learned, is that it's okay to outsource work so you can focus on what you do best.

I'm going to keep that one in mind for a possible future project.

Orange Cake

I made an orange cake for a dear friend's birthday.

Camberwell Market

For the past few weeks I have been holding a stall at the Camberwell Market with a friend of mine. Catherine sells vintage clothes. A lot of her stock is from the U.K as she lived there for five years. She also has furniture, but at the moment it's not at the market.

I'm selling Japanese antiques, my art and pouches. I'll be there every Sunday except for May 30. On that day I'm selling crafts with another friend at the Rose St. Market.

Come along and say hello if you can.

Dreams can be painful

Studying at fashion school has been one of many dreams of mine which has now turned into a reality. Just like my dream, I am enjoying my course and have learned a lot of new skills and met some interesting people.

However, at times it can be very painful. Like my teacher making me unpick an invisible zipper four times. Or when the commercial over-locker that seems to run at 100km per hour chews and cuts my fabric like a lawnmower cutting through blades of grass.

I also find myself tired at school and struggle to concentrate. It's difficult working six days a week, plus studying part-time can be just a little hard.

So when I have to unpick something for the 100th time and almost want to quit my course, I try and think about why I began and the dream I had before I began studying. I also try and think about the big picture and that it takes lots of practice to get good at anything. But still it is painful.
